[Golf Life in AL] Shooting an 81 at Lakewinds GC: Early Bird Momentum and a Clutch 2-Over Back Nine
There is something special about an early Sunday morning round. Today, our trio teed off at 6:45 AM at Lakewinds Golf Course in Alexander City, AL. Playing in the cool morning air and wrapping up 18 holes by 10:15 AM is the ultimate weekend efficiency.
More importantly, today’s scorecard was a story of two completely different halves: a shaky 44 (+9) on the Front Nine followed by a laser-focused 37 (+2) on the Back Nine, bringing home a final score of 81 (+11)!
Here is the breakdown of today’s morning round, complete with course highlights and a few wild lies along the way.
π 1. Early Morning Tee Times: Cool Air and Smooth Pace
Teeing off before 7 AM comes with huge advantages:
Pace of Play: Finishing 18 holes in just 3 hours and 30 minutes with a 3-person group meant no waiting on tee boxes.
Course Conditions: Calm winds and fresh morning greens allowed for crisp ball-striking early on.

π 2. Scorecard Analysis: Front 44 / Back 37
Looking closely at today's Smart Caddie scorecard breakdown:
⛳️ Front Nine (Par 35) — 44 (+9)
Pars: 3 holes (Holes 2, 6, 7)
Bogeys: 4 holes (Holes 3, 4, 5, 9)
Double Bogeys: 2 holes (Holes 1, 8)
The front nine started a bit rusty with a double-bogey on Hole 1. Another double on the Par-5 8th hole pushed the front side to a 44. I spent most of the front nine finding my rhythm on approach shots.
⛳️ Back Nine (Par 35) — 37 (+2) π₯
Birdie: 1 hole! (Hole 4 - Par 4) π¦
Pars: 5 holes (Holes 1, 2, 3, 5, 7)
Bogeys: 3 holes (Holes 6, 8, 9)
Double Bogeys: 0
Whatever clicked on the back nine changed the trajectory of the entire round! Starting with three straight pars, sinking a clutch birdie on the Par-4 4th hole, and avoiding any double-bogeys kept the back nine to an impressive 37 (+2).
⏳ 3. The Shot of the Day: Surviving a Nightmare Bunker Lip
Golf is a game of inches. On one of our holes, my approach shot ended up resting directly on the steep grass edge right above the bunker sand.

Having your ball sit on a steep slope right next to soft sand requires maximum precision:
The Setup: Wide stance with more weight on the left side to prevent slipping into the bunker.
The Execution: A steep downswing with a soft wedge, focusing on making clean ball-first contact without hitting the bunker wall.
Escaping tough lies like this without taking a penalty stroke was the key to holding together the 2-over back nine!
⛳️ 4. Key Lessons from Shooting an 81
Resetting After the Front 9: Turning a 44 into an 81 proves that one bad stretch doesn't have to ruin your entire score. Stay patient and wait for your swing to find its groove.
Back Nine Consistency: Hitting 5 pars and a birdie over 9 holes builds tremendous momentum for future rounds.
Smart Caddie Strategy: Using wrist-based GPS to manage distances saved crucial strokes when approaching greens guarded by water and pine trees.
