⛳️ A Self-Taught Golfer’s Shocking Realization After 10 Years on YouTube
“My Right Wrist Was the Real Problem All Along”
I’ve been learning golf through YouTube for more than 10 years as a completely self-taught golfer.
Recently, I made a grip change, and suddenly my driver and irons started feeling amazing.
For a moment, I thought:
“Finally… maybe I figured it out.”
But only a few days later, everything started falling apart again.
- Fat shots
- Thin shots
- Weak iron distance
- Pushes to the right
The inconsistency came back immediately.
Frustrated, I decided to record my swing again and analyze it carefully.
That’s when I discovered something shocking.
👉 The problem wasn’t my swing plane.
👉 It wasn’t my lower body.
👉 It wasn’t a lack of power.
🔥 The real culprit was my right wrist.
🧠 The Problem I Didn’t Notice for 10 Years
“Use your right wrist.”
“Create wrist hinge.”
The problem was…
I completely misunderstood what that movement actually meant.
❌ What I Was Doing Wrong
During the backswing:
👉 I excessively bent my right wrist backward.
As a result:
- the clubface became too open,
- and during the downswing, my wrists couldn’t release naturally.
At impact:
❌ the clubface stayed open too long
❌ power transfer became weak
❌ and I started scooping the ball
📉 Do You Have These Symptoms Too?
If 3 or more of these apply to you, your right wrist movement might also be causing problems.
✅ Your long irons feel weak
✅ Your 5-iron goes only as far as your 7-iron
✅ Impact feels soft or inconsistent
✅ Your shots constantly push right
✅ You alternate between fat and thin shots
✅ Your wrists feel uncomfortable during the swing
✅ Ball striking feels inconsistent every round
Honestly… I had almost all of them.
💥 Why This Problem Is So Dangerous
The scary part is:
👉 One small wrist mistake creates multiple swing problems.
The Chain Reaction I Experienced
| Problem | Result |
|---|---|
| Incorrect wrist hinge | Open clubface |
| Open clubface | Weak impact |
| Weak distance | Swing harder |
| Swing harder | More scooping |
| Repeat cycle | Loss of confidence 😭 |
🎥 The Biggest Danger of Learning Golf Only Through YouTube
👉 You can repeat the wrong movement for years while believing it’s correct.
For 10 years, I thought:
- I lacked flexibility
- I lacked power
- My lower body sequencing was wrong
But the real issue was simply:
🔥 one small right wrist movement.
🛠 What I’m Trying to Change Now
In my next rounds and practice sessions, I’m focusing on only two things.
1️⃣ Less Excessive Right Wrist Extension in the Backswing
Instead of aggressively bending my wrist back,
👉 I’m trying to feel a more natural hinge.
2️⃣ Stop Forcing the Release
Instead of “throwing” my hands at the ball,
👉 I’m trying to let the release happen naturally through body rotation.
Still working on it.
🎯 What I Finally Realized
Golf is a terrifying sport sometimes.
Especially when you learn alone.
❌ If you learn something incorrectly,
👉 that mistake slowly becomes “your swing.”
And after years of repetition, it feels normal.
I finally realized:
🔥 The problem wasn’t strength.
🔥 It was movement.
💬 What About You?
Do you struggle with:
- weak long iron distance?
- fat and thin shots?
- scooping?
- inconsistent impact?
The cause might not be what you think.
👉 It could be your right wrist too.
If you’ve gone through something similar, share your experience in the comments.
Maybe we can save each other from wasting another 10 years 😅
